About the Behaviour and Achievement Strategy

After the launch of the behaviour and Achievement Strategy in 2003, Hertfordshire County Council is continuing to invest in helping schools cope with the challenging behaviour of some children. The funding will help ensure that children in Hertfordshire get the right support at the right time in the right place.
The Behaviour and Achievement Strategy will provide:
- 21 learning support units in secondary schools for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties
- 11 extra nurture groups in primary schools for children who need extra help to settle into the school environment
- More places in special schools for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties
- More expert advisers to assist schools in improving children’s behaviour
The initiative is ensuring that children at risk of failing receive the extra help they need, to help them achieve to the best of their potential and enable them to leave education with better prospects. The environment for all children in the classroom will also improve as a result.
Plans include further developing the capacity of the Children, Schools and Families Service to:
- Support and advise schools to promote good behaviour and deal with difficult pupils
- Target support to children at the greatest risk of failure, disaffection or exclusion
- Offer training and professional support to teachers and other staff in schools
- Identify and respond to problems as early as possible
- Support schools and other youth settings to more effectively prevent and respond to incidents of bullying
