Family Learning

Family Learning describes a range of activities that involve parents and children, learning together to develop new skills and knowledge. They promote learning as a positive enjoyable experience that continues throughout our lives. The definition of Family Learning is broad and can include a range of adults who support children’s learning including carers and grandparents

Family Learning programmes offer opportunities for:

• Families to learn together
• Parents/carers to develop the skills and knowledge to support their children’s learning
• Parents/carers to develop their own skills and gain national qualifications

Programmes are held in schools, children’s centres and other venues suitable for families. They vary from short taster sessions to longer courses that may last a term or more. Programmes include:

• Funky Food
• Play and Language
• Family Finance
• Story Sacks
• Family literacy, language or numeracy
• Keeping up with the children

Hertfordshire Adult and Family Learning Service provides Family Learning programmes through its own team of teachers and in partnership with other providers. Last year over 1500 parents/carers enrolled on Family Learning programmes in over 100 venues in the county
