P - Sustainability - HPS Property Matters

Introduction

People have a range of views about how to respond to sustainability. However, there is general agreement that sustainability is positive. Although it does not have a defined position, the County Council is keen to develop sustainability. This section is intended to raise awareness and to engage all concerned in the debate as well as to provide some practical suggestions.

Governments, local authorities, companies and individuals are taking a rising interest in sustainability issues in relation to the design and use of buildings. Individuals and local communities, including schools, can all play their part en-route to becoming truly sustainable by implementing changes, such as recycling and ensuring that their energy is from a renewable source or green agreement. But there is a long way to go until we can say that we are truly sustainable.

Hertfordshire County Council and CSF are committed to achieving the major aims of sustainability by promoting the reduction of energy, reducing waste and recycling. The design of sustainable schools is a corporate ambition.

Sustainability is a very large topic. Within these pages we have summarized what sustainability is and how it can improve our environment. We have also included some practical guidance on how you, as a significant energy user, can help to implement sustainable practices. The practical guidance covers items such as sustainable design, waste management and renewable energy sources funding.

We have concentrated on the environmental issues of sustainability for these pages. By this we mean preventing harmful or irreversible effects to the environment. However, sustainability does not stop with environmental issues alone it includes;

-  Economic sustainability - Ensuring long-term prosperity through the effective use of resources.

- Social sustainability - Treating all people fairly, providing equal opportunity and responding to the needs of the stakeholder.

It should be noted that by embracing a sustainable approach to design and energy we will be putting in place a foundation stone policy for our children and their children and for future generations to come.
