Event:   Walkern Fair
Venue:  Sports & Recreation Ground, High Street, Walkern, Herts

From the hugely popular novelty dog show to the exciting tug of war challenge, there’s something for everyone at the annual Walkern Fair – this year being held on Sunday, 4 May.

It’s a great day out with a whole host of entertainment including a bouncy castle; fairground attractions; a special children’s play area; charity stalls and side shows like the coconut shy and plate smashing; trailer rides for kids; a display of military vehicles; clay pigeon shooting; and lots more.

The 2008 Fair will be opened by Pepe the Clown and Julian the Juggler from Circus Unlimited, who will also perform in the main arena during the day and mix with the crowds to keep the kids (and parents) amused.

Event:   EXHIBITION: THE MASTERS OF THE BOYS BRITISH SCHOOL 1810-1929
Venue:  British Schools Museum, Queen Street, Hitchin SG4 9TS

When Thomas Dimsey opened the first Lancasterian School here, there was no Government involvement in the education of poor children from the working classes. In the early years of the 20th Century Masters Thomas Pengelly and William Corbett were part of a state system: they saw responsibility for the school transferred to Hertfordshire County Council.
Seven Masters dedicated themselves to the education of young children. They saw the British Schools site grow dramatically as new classrooms were built. They coped with the changes - and school inspections - the Government imposed upon them.
Their stories are told in this exhibition.
A new book "Educating Our Own - the Masters of the Boys' British School" will be published in April 2008
