Event:   EXHIBITION: Masters of the Boys British School 1810-1929
Venue:  British Schools Museum, Queen Street, Hitchin SG4 9TS

Exhibition runs from 22 March to August. Regular opening hours are: Tues. 10 am - 4 pm, Sat.10 am - 1 pm, Sun 2 pm - 5 pm.
When Thomas Dimsey opened the first Lancasterian School here, there was no Government involvement in the education of poor children from the working classes.
In the early years of the 20th Century Thomas Pengelly and William Corbett were part of a state system; they saw responsibility for the school transferred to Hertfordshire County Council.
Seven Masters dedicated themselves to the education of young children. They saw the British Schools site grow dramatically as new classrooms were built. They coped with the changes - and the school inspections - the Government imposed upon them.
Their stories are told in this exhibition.

A new book "Educating Our Own – the Masters of the Boys' British School" was published in April 2008.

Vanessa Stone is an unusual artist. She makes bold and delicate paper cut-outs by drawing with a scalpel in black paper. She reveals bodies formed from fluid lines and curves and what she cuts out is just as important as what's left.
