The County Council's approach to the landscape of the county has evolved since 1969 and is detailed in the technical archive.
The main thrust of strategic work today is to encourage the application of the Hertfordshire Landscape Character Assessment (HLCA). The HLCA includes information to guide development and the management of landscape change, and can also be used for more sophisticated activities such as landscape sensitivity/capacity studies and local landscape designations. Most important, it provides information at a scale between local community and regional initiatives, providing a context for the former and a more sensitive interpretation of the latter.
