The Hertfordshire Historic Environment Record
The Hertfordshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is a computerised record of Hertfordshire’s historic environment. It contains information on historic buildings, archaeological remains, historic sites and military remains.
The HER can be used to identify significant historic remains and finds. It also contains information on surveys and archaeological excavations undertaken in Hertfordshire.
The information contained within the HER is particularly suitable for use by researchers and people interested in the historic heritage of their local area. Schools can also use the information to help with areas of the National Curriculum.
The HER contains a large library of surveys, archaeological reports, and over 2000 aerial photographs of the county. There are limited facilities to inspect this material at County Hall.
A free service is provided to students and members of the public. Commercial users will be charged for the time taken to provide the information and for any materials used.
The records for monuments and buildings are now available online at
www.heritagegateway.org.uk. Alternatively, you can contact the Historic Environment Unit directly on 01992 555245.
