Chipperfield Barrows

The two round burial mounds on Chipperfield Common probably date from the Early Bronze Age (c.2300 - c.1400 B.C.). The barrows were originally surrounded by ditches, but these have been filled in over time, mainly with earth eroded from the mounds. These burial mounds usually contain the ashes of a single cremation, often in a pottery vessel, and sometimes accompanied by objects intended for use in the next world.

Turn left at the junction of King’s Lane and The Common, to reach Chipperfield Common. A car park is provided on the right hand side, and a footpath runs to the left to join a heritage trail through the woods. The barrows can be found by following the coloured waymarkers, and the grid reference is TL 0462 0126 and TL 0471 0121.
