Take a taster tour of the county's heritage

Heritage - Website

This web site is designed to provide an on-line taste of our local heritage as well as acting as a reception desk, encouraging visitors to find out more by linking to other web sites and offering contact details of related organisations.

The creation of the site was led by Hertfordshire Museums who won a Millennium Festival grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the project. The site was created by a wide partnership including local historians, archivists, museum curators, natural historians and young people. The diversity of the people involved resulted in a rich and varied site.
Heritage - Website
The site consists of six 'virtual tours' which focus on subjects that make this county special. The topics are:
· The Film Industry
· Garden Cities and New Towns
· Transport
· Beer and Malting
· The Natural Environment
· Young People’s Heritage

Visitors to the site are able to view plenty of original historic material from archive and museum collections. For example they can view plans used to build some of the first Garden Cities and admire photographs of Rex Harrison, Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick working in Hertfordshire. The web site allows visitors to discover things about Hertfordshire that they didn’t already know, such as where and when the first balloon flight in Britain took place or where the 'pub with no beer' operated successfully for many years.
