Trade Directories

HALS Trade Directory 1838

Trade directories, from around 1800 to the 1970s were similar to 'phone books with many of them listing by surname and trade.


From the 1860s most give addresses of private residents. The directories from the early to mid 20th century contain more people and many are listed by address as well as surname.

They were produced by several companies, mainly Kelly's and also show details of public institutions, charities, a brief history of the town and adverts.

Drawbacks...
  • They only show the owner of a business or the head of the household
  • People renting were not usually included
  • They took some time to compile and the information may be up to a year old before the publication date
  • Private residents might choose not to be listed
