19th Century Indexed Newspapers
A large proportion of newspaper holdings from 1970 to 2007 have been indexed of HALSPIN. This is an index to items of Hertfordshire interest published in newspapers and periodicals held by Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies at County Hall, Hertford.

The type of information indexed from the 19th century newspapers includes:
- petty sessions
- quarter sessions
- assizes
- commitments to gaol
- bankruptcies
- marriage notices
- obituaries
- coroners' inquests
- funerals
- wills
- accidents
- sales by auction of houses, farms and pubs
- elections
- fires
- restoration and destruction of buildings
and many other events and stories of Hertfordshire people and places
All indexing since about 2000 has been stored on HALSPIN. Prior to 2000 the index was typed onto index cards and a recent project has loaded them all onto HALSPIN. Therefore, many articles referred to in the index are dated before 2000, and some before 1900. HALSPIN can be accessed via Orlib (online reference library) at all Hertfordshire libraries. Any items found of interest may be consulted at Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies or copies may be ordered.
