Archive Catalogue Index

Search an index to the catalogue of collections of original documents in Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies. The index is an easy way of finding out what archive material is held at Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies for places in Hertfordshire. It contains all the information from an old card system, which brought together references in our archive catalogues to documents which are 'to do with a place'. The cards had sections: deeds, estate, manorial, maps and plans, parish, personal and miscellaneous, sale particulars, official, ecclesiastical and charity, and business. It highlights certain documents and acts as a gateway into our catalogues and collections.
A brief description of the document will be given, together with the document’s unique reference number. Quote that number when planning a visit to the office, or if you would like the document copied. The number tells you what collection the item is part of.
The Catalogue indexes general catalogue descriptions, not the actual contents of documents. It indexes only documents which are to do with a place; a manual names index is at the archives centre as well as some subject indexing. It gives a summary only; the catalogue often gives more information. Many catalogues are available on the Access to Archives website, (see link on right), and all can be consulted at Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies.
