Welcome to Archives and Local Studies

HALS gipsy We are the specialist centre for local and family history for the whole of Hertfordshire, covering many aspects of life in the county including people, the environment and the geography. Based at County Hall in Hertford, there are over 6,000 archive collections, 30,000 books, 60,000 images, 10,000 maps and 200 newspaper and periodical titles.

If you are researching your family history, the history of your house, town or village, or need help with a school or local studies project, we can help you. Anyone can use Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies and there is no charge for consulting records.
