Definition of Music Therapy

What is music therapy?
Music therapy is an interactive, primarily non-verbal intervention. It provides a process through which people can express themselves, become aware of their feelings and interact more easily. Music therapy can provide new insights into a person’s functioning. Therapists work with all age ranges, in a wide variety of settings.

Music is a powerful emotional medium, which can affect us all deeply. In music therapy sessions, interactive music is spontaneously created by the client and therapist. The client does not need any musical training or experience in order to make use of music therapy. Accessible instruments are provided for the client to play. These might include a selection of percussion instruments.

The therapist seeks to establish contact with the client through the shared use of sound. Any form of communication from the client is responded to and supported with music or words. This communication could include the client’s music, vocal sounds, movement, words or facial expression.

By establishing a relationship through music, the client can experience and explore new ways of relating, leading to development and change.

What are the aims of music therapy?
The aims of music therapy are primarily non-musical, and are determined by the needs of each client. Typically, they might include:
  • increasing communication, interaction and self expression
  • developing an awareness of self and others
  • providing emotional support
  • developing skills such as listening, sharing and turn-taking
  • developing co-ordination and motor control
  • increasing self confidence

Music therapy contributes to a person’s overall development, enabling him or her to reach their full potential in other settings.
