Definition of Arts Therapies

The arts therapies (art, dance-movement, drama and music) are used to help people of all ages and abilities to communicate and interact, understand their feelings and express themselves. The arts therapies can help in areas including:
  • communication disorders
  • learning disabilities
  • mental health problems
  • physical difficulties
  • emotional problems
  • challenging behaviour

Arts therapists work in a wide range of settings, including special and mainstream schools, hospitals, residential homes, clinics and community settings.

Art, drama and music therapy are State Registered professions. This means that anyone working in one of these professions must be qualified to do so. Dance-movement therapy is shortly to become a State Registered profession also.
