Learning and Development Opportunities

Learning and development focuses on making sure that HCC employee’s have the knowledge, skills, attitudes and awareness they need to do quality work and get the results we want. We provide the opportunities, however we also expect our employees to recognise that they are responsible for doing the learning.

L&D support can include time to attend training, paying for the programme, study time and being released from work to take part. This is discussed and agreed between each employee and their manager, with advice and support from our L&D specialists.

There is a range of different opportunities such as:
  • Training courses and conferences

  • Organised by ourselves in-house, or attended externally. These cover areas such as health and safety, ICT, personal development, effective communication, assertiveness and presentation skills.
  • Workshops or briefings

  • For example when we have any major changes in the organisation or produce new policies or initiatives – for example, our aim is that all our employees have the change to take part in an L&D event to look at the language and behaviours that are important to making our diversity strategy work.
  • Leadership development

  • To help create the kind of leaders we want for HCC now and in the future.
  • Managers skills development

  • To help managers and supervisors to manage effectively and put our policies into practice effectively. Also for aspiring employees to move into management.
  • NVQ’s and other professional qualifications

  • Where they are a requirement for the job and for further career development.
  • Continued Professional Development

  • Where people work in a professional area with a requirement that they keep their knowledge and skills up to date.
  • Career grade schemes

  • Through which employees can get the development and experiences needed to work at their current level and also to be able to work their way up the grades in their area of work.
  • Secondments

  • opportunities to take on other work roles for short or long periods in a different section and ocassionally in a different organisation.
  • Mentoring and coaching

  • One to one personal guidance and support to help with career development or to work on particular issues that are affecting performance and plan what actions to take.
  • Work shadowing

  • A chance to observe and experience somebody doing a different job.
  • E-learning

  • Learning programmes you can do on the computer or CD – ROM, working at your own pace. Our ECDL programmes, for example, offer a European recognised computer qualification.
  • Team and group development

  • for example this year we have offered programmes aimed at empowering and developing our black and Asian employees.
