Social care workers working with adults in Supported Living services

scr-smile3

What does a support worker in Supported Living services do?

Supported Living services involve working with adults with disabilities who live in both our homes and their own homes. Most tenants pursue day activities outside the hostel or their home, so supported living cover is minimal during the day.

The role is to help people maintain their independence and lead as full a life as possible. A generation ago most people with learning disabilities had little contact with the mainstream community. Today, the aim is to give them the individual encouragement, support, help and care they need to develop their abilities and enjoy the same things in life as everyone else, from social and leisure activities and further education to jobs and homes of their own.

What are the hours and what will I get paid?

Staff work shift and sleep over rotas to ensure appropriate support is available when residents are at home. The shift pattern is usually 7.30am to 3.30pm and 3.30pm to 10pm. Weekend and bank holiday work is also required - usually this means working alternate weekends.

The salary for Supported Living Staff (from April 2005) is £14,364 to £17,583 dependent on grade and location, salaries pro rata for part time workers. Additional payments are made for weekend, bank holiday and sleep-overs.

Will I need any qualifications or experience?

There are no specific minimum entry requirements. An ability to offer personal care, understanding and patience, are usually considered more important than qualifications.

What training do I get?

All new care workers undertake a 5-day induction course, which includes moving and handling, food hygiene, first aid, and medication administration. Further training is available to support your development and you will be encouraged to complete an NVQ II in the care sector.

What are my future prospects and opportunities?

Many of our staff progress into more senior posts through our development program.
