Social care workers working with adults in day services
What does a social care worker in day services do?
Day Services work involves supporting and enabling adults with disabilities who may be elderly suffering from dementia, have a learning disability and physical or mental health needs. Increasingly, day centres are also providing respite care - taking clients so that their carers get a break.
The role is to help people maintain their independence and lead as full a life as possible. Many clients live on their own and only get the chance to meet with others at the centre, so social and outreach activities play a large part in the care programme of a client.
What are the hours and what will I get paid?
Most services operate between 8.30am and 5pm with some evening sessions and/or weekend sessions. Where able, we offer flexible working for those with children and dependants.
The salary for Day Services Support Staff (from April 2005) start from £13,458 up to £16,101 dependent on grade and location, salaries pro rata for part time workers.
We also have a number of temporary vacancies available paying from £7.50 an hour plus benefits.
Will I need any qualifications or experience?
There are no specific minimum entry requirements. An ability to offer personal care, understanding and patience, are usually considered more important than qualifications.
What training do I get?
All new care workers undertake a 5-day induction course, which includes moving and handling, food hygiene, first aid, and medication administration. Further training is available to support your development and you will be encouraged to complete an NVQ II in the care sector.
What are my future prospects and opportunities?
Many of our staff progress into more senior posts such as Day Service Organiser or Team Leader through our development program.
