Consultation on the Potters Bar Review of Primary School Places May 2006

Determination by the Office of the Schools Adjudicator to close Sunny Bank School from 31 August 2008

The Office of the Schools Adjudicator has published a decision on a proposal by Hertfordshire County Council to close Sunny Bank Primary School, Potters Bar from September 2007. The adjudicator, Richard Lindley, has approved the proposal, but with the implementation date modified to September 2008.

The adjudicator realised that the Council had to take action in the face of the high proportion of surplus primary school places in the locality of the school and at the school itself. Although the closure of any school is regrettable, the Council has undertaken to make places available at the nearby Cranborne Primary School for all parents who choose to transfer their children there, providing additional classroom accommodation as necessary. The Council has undertaken to make continuing provision for St John’s Playgroup on the Sunny Bank site for one year after the school closure, and thereafter at Cranborne School. The adjudicator has urged the Council to maintain appropriate dialogue with the playgroup, and to give careful attention to the safety of all children travelling to Cranborne School. The full determination is published below:
