These dates are based on the following principles which have been agreed by the teachers union’s representatives:
- The Local Authority should set an “envelope” of 196 days to include 190 teaching days, 5 professional development days and 1 occasional day
- The Spring holiday should be the first two full weeks in April
- Half-term holidays should be full weeks
- Half-terms should align as closely as possible with neighbouring Local Authorities
- There should be as many full weeks in school as possible
We have also tried, wherever possible, to arrange for the Christmas holiday to include 2 full weeks and 3 weekends. However, the calendar for 2006/07 would mean that this would result in an extremely early finish (15 December) which would produce significant difficulties for schools and families. Consequently it is not proposed to adopt this principle for 2006/07 but it will be considered again for 2007/08.
If you have any views on these dates will you please complete the online questionnaire.
Thank you in anticipation of your response.
