Road safety education for primary schools

Road Safety - Get Involved We offer a number of services and these are outlined below:
Curriculum planning and support

Help for teachers when planning their programmes of work so that they can include road safety in their topics, subject areas or into the PSHE programme. This can be in the form of an INSET or informal discussion. We have a number of resources that can be loaned to teachers, each resource designed for a different year group. We also provide information about how to obtain free resources from Department for Transport.

After Schools Club

If you run an After Schools Club we have a booklet of worksheets and fun activities about Road Safety. There are both quiet and active games suitable for children aged 4 to 11. Contact the Road Safety Unit for your free copy.

Uniformed Organisations

If you run a Scout, Guide, Brownie, Cub, Beaver or Rainbow pack you can download our useful packs filled with fun ideas to help children complete their badges.

Pedestrian skills training

Road Safety Officers can train volunteers at your school to teach pedestrian skills to your pupils at Key Stage 1 and 2. Using the local area around the school, children will be encouraged to consider the road environment and develop practical skills for road safety and crossing the road. The programme at Key Stage 1 concentrates on helping children raise their awareness of road safety while at Key Stage 2, the programme provides children with the practical skills to identify safe crossing places and cope with parked cars / junctions.

Cycle training

The road safety unit are able to provide officers who will train volunteers at your school to become cycle instructors both for on and off road courses. These courses are designed for year 6 pupils and above.
