Hertfordshire Safety Camera Partnership detailsThe Hertfordshire Safety Camera Partnership was launched in October 2002 following a successful bid to the Department for Transport (DfT) by Hertfordshire County Council, Hertfordshire Constabulary and Hertfordshire Magistrates Courts. The sole aim of the Partnership is to reduce the number of casualties on Hertfordshire's roads by the introduction of more safety cameras across the county.
The Hertfordshire Partnership is part of the national safety camera partnership scheme.
Safety cameras are a proven method of reducing collisions involving speed and they have become another option available to help deal with speed related casualties.
They will primarily be used where there is a 30 or 40mph speed limit.
Do you know your speed limits? Check the pdf at the bottom of the page.
There are strict criteria regarding the use of cameras, including their siting and visibility. Static camera sites can only be positioned on a section of road, 1km in length, where there has been a minimum of fourfatal and/or serious collisions within a three year period. The criteria for mobile sites are for two fatal and/or serious collisions on a 1km section of road within a three year period.
All new cameras are painted bright yellow to make them easily identifiable to drivers.
Static and red light camera sites can be viewed by using the link below. (Red light cameras are used at junctions to detect drivers who jump the lights when they are red). From time to time it may be possible to see uncommissioned camera housings around the County. These sites will appear on the list once they are fully operational but not before. The majority of static cameras used in Hertfordshire are Gatsos which measure speed by means of a beam fired from the camera. Vehicles exceeding the set speed limit are photographed twice from the rear. In South Oxhey the Partnership has recently started to use front-facing Truvelo cameras which calculate speed by measuring the time taken between the front and rear wheels compressing pressure strips in the road. If this exceeds the limit, a head-on picture is taken, using infra-red flash.
Mobile cameras are in Safety Camera Partnership vans in different roadside locations on different days. These are posted weekly and can be viewed via the link below. Please note that Partnership mobile operations are carried out in addition to Hertfordshire Constabulary speed enforcement, which may be carried out at any time, by any police officer and is not notified on the website.
7559 people have completed Speed Awareness courses since they began in Hertfordshire on 15 August 2006,
