Polish your motorcycling skills by becoming an Advanced Motorcyclist. HCC Road Safety Unit offers a theory course in partnership with Hertfordshire Police instructors. The four theory classes and a practical assessment ride will help you prepare for the ultimate challenge – an advanced riding test!
The course will introduce you to the system of riding used by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders (RoADAR). It will help you to reach the standard to pass their tests, and increase the enjoyment that is so much a part of motorcycling.
The four evening classes are held weekly at Hertfordshire Police HQ, Welwyn Garden City, from 7:30 to 9pm. The Instructors cover defensive riding, hazard perception and correct use of speed. The aim is to raise the standard of riding for all traffic situations. They will also offer you a practical ride on the Sunday before the last class, when you can have your riding skills assessed.
The syllabus is based on the police rider’s handbook, 'Motorcycle Roadcraft'. Candidates are each given a copy of this, together with a Highway Code as part of the £50 course fee. There is a reduction to £40 if you are a student, retired, unemployed or receiving benefits.
Many of the latest bikes are high-powered sports and performance machines capable of exceptional speeds and acceleration. They demand increased riding skills and abilities. But the last few years have seen a steep rise in motorcycle casualties, often as a result of failing to cope with the power and performance of the machine.
Advanced motorcyclists always aim to be in the best road position, at the right speed in the correct gear so as to stay cool, calm and in control, whatever the circumstances. Join them and see how much you could benefit!
The next available course is now open for bookings. Please note that on this occasion the first session is on a Monday evening, but the other 3 sessions will be on Tuesdays. For exact dates and to book a place online use the link below or contact the Road Safety Unit.
