Flooding

Hertfordshire Highways have a duty to ensure that roads and pavements are in a safe and usable condition – if a drain is blocked, a pipe bursts or a subway becomes flooded the road and pavement can become very dangerous and it must be repaired as quickly as possible.

Drainage problems include both standing and running water, and this can affect property or the highway itself. There is also the damage that can be caused by water penetrating into the foundations of a road or pavement, something that needs to be monitored carefully.

Hertfordshire Highways will collect and discharge water to a suitable place, such as ditches, or rivers. Long term solutions and preventions include the use of kerbs, gullies, pipes and resurfacing roads so that water does not sit on them.
