Tips for green gardening

Gardens can be havens for birds, mammals, plant and insects. Even if you have a small garden, you can promote biodiversity, grow your own food and reduce greenhouse gases just by growing some plants.

Tips for green gardening include:
  • Garden organically
  • Use furniture made out of wood from managed forests
  • Buy wildlife friendly paints and wood treatments
  • Compost your kitchen and garden waste
  • Grow your own food
  • If you want garden lights, try solar powered ones
  • Use companion planting to control pests
  • Use peat free compost
  • Collect rainwater in a butt to water the garden
  • Make leaf mould
  • Encourage natural pest predators e.g. hedgehogs, frogs, ladybirds and hoverflies
  • Dig a pond
  • Put up bird and bat boxes
  • Don't use patio heaters
