Gardens can be havens for birds, mammals, plant and insects. Even if you have a small garden, you can promote biodiversity, grow your own food and reduce greenhouse gases just by growing some plants.
Tips for green gardening include:
- Garden organically
- Use furniture made out of wood from managed forests
- Buy wildlife friendly paints and wood treatments
- Compost your kitchen and garden waste
- Grow your own food
- If you want garden lights, try solar powered ones
- Use companion planting to control pests
- Use peat free compost
- Collect rainwater in a butt to water the garden
- Make leaf mould
- Encourage natural pest predators e.g. hedgehogs, frogs, ladybirds and hoverflies
- Dig a pond
