Subways

A pedestrian subway is provided to allow people to move safely under a road which otherwise would be hazardous to cross. Many people are concerned about entering subways, especially at night, and it is therefore important they should be well lit both internally and externally. It is mainly the fear of crime that drives this concern.

A bright appearance of subway interior, balanced with a bright exterior (ramps, stairs and approaches) encourages confident use and deters vandalism. Daytime interior lighting is also provided to avoid shadows being cast within the subway
