We all need artificial light. Good lighting can reduce crime and the fear of crime and provide a safer environment for activities such as walking, cycling and driving. Our enjoyment of the night time environment can be enhanced by decorative lights and the lighting of buildings and monuments. However, too much lighting or lights that are badly installed can lead to light pollution.
This information has been produced by the Hertfordshire County Council Lighting Topic Group as a guide to the various forms of external lighting. It covers techniques, installation methods and light control. It also gives guidance and contact details on what you can do if poor lighting installations affect you.
