This Green Way runs between Welwyn Garden City and Hertford for around 6 kilometres and is accessible for all users except motorised vehicles.
It follows the old Hertford & Welwyn Junction Railway opened in 1858 to connect the County Town with the Great Northern Mainline which runs between London and Edinburgh. It runs through the villages of Cole Green (where the remnants of the platform can still be seen) and Hertingfordbury. The line was closed in 1966 as part of the Beeching cuts, having been largely superceded by the Hertford loop line.
If you are starting your journey from Welwyn Garden City the place to start is in Cole Green Lane just off the B195, Black Fan Road, east of the town. From there you pass under the A414 to the old Cole Green station where there is a car park and picnic area (also a nearby refurbished public house, the Cowper Arms). From Cole Green the path travels east past the old station buildings at Hertingfordbury and then under the Hertford Loop Line Viaduct to the end of the route close to Hertford Football Ground.
Once you arrive in Hertford you can continue down West Street to the town centre and then on to Ware following the River Lea towpath.
