Hertfordshire has a gentle and pastoral countryside of rolling fields that hide ancient, unspoilt villages of charm and character reached by wooded country lanes.
To the west of the county is the Chilterns with over 4000 acres of unspoilt rolling countryside made up of commons and ancient woodland. To the east is the 23 mile long Lee Valley Park, following the course of the River Lea from Ware to London's East End. It has been developed as an area for recreation, sport and entertainment.
The city of St. Albans, named after Britain's first Christian martyr, has been important since Roman times, retaining historical treasures such as Verulamium, site of the country's third largest Roman city and the magnificent Cathedral and Abbey Church.
