Living at home

This section provides information on help with everyday tasks to make life easier for people who are disabled, including:
  • Having suitable equipment may be crucial to independent living, ranging from a bottle opener for someone with reduced grip, to a hoist.
  • On a larger scale, you could consider adaptations to your home. This might be anything from widening a doorway to building a downstairs bathroom.
  • Services which come to your home can offer support, eg Meals on Wheels, home visiting hairdressers, supermarket delivery services.
  • A gardener, cleaner and handyperson can help you maintain your home.
  • Personal assistants can help you with daily routines such as getting up, bathing and cooking.
  • Social workers, information advisors and occupational therapists can help you find the best solutions. They will talk to you to find out what you need and then either organise help through Hertfordshire’s own Adult Care Services or arrange for help to come from some other organisation.
