Carers rights & support services

If you care for a disabled or elderly member of your immediate family, relative or neighbour, you are a carer. As such you may have particular needs and there are groups, services and legislation to help support you in the work that you do.

The Carers Act (1995) and The Carers and Disabled Children Act (2001) provide for the assessment of carers needs and the right to support services. The Carers (Equal Opportunities) Act (2004) aims to ensure that all carers should have equal access to education, jobs and leisure pursuits.

Carers groups can provide information on your rights and the services available, as well as giving you the opportunity to talk to other people who are also caring for a disabled person.
