Speech and language therapists work with people who need to develop their communication skills, or who are having difficulties with eating or swallowing. This may include children with delayed speech, or adults with a hearing impairment, stammer or speech affected by a stroke, head injury or other neurological disorder
Referral to a speech and language therapist is usually made by a doctor, nurse or occupational therapist.
Some stroke groups and clubs arrange speech and language activities to help their members develop better communication skills.
