Occupational therapy and rehabilitation

If you have been in an accident or have an illness or disability that significantly affects your daily life, you may benefit from the skills of an occupational therapist. Occupational therapists (OTs) help you to become as independent as possible in all areas of your life.

Some OTs work in hospitals or rehabilitation centres. Others work in the community and may visit people in their homes. OTs will discuss problems you may be having and what might help - possibly using specialist equipment, making adaptations to your home, or learning different strategies for doing things.

You may be referred to see an OT by a health or social care professional. Most OTs work within the NHS or local authority social care departments, but some work independently and can be approached privately.
