Dentists

Most dentists now work in private practice, but NHS Direct can advise you on local dentists that will accept NHS patients.

Dental treatment, including check ups, is free of charge for children and young people, pregnant women and those on low incomes, if you are registered with an NHS dentist. See health benefits for details about claiming if you have a low income. No state help is available if you attend a dentist in private practice.

If you have a child with special needs, or are housebound, or you have physical disabilities or mental illness, you may be able to register with the Community Dental Service in your area. These dentists work in health centres, clinics, care homes and hospitals.

Dentists may make home visits to those with mobility difficulties.

If you have difficulties with access to dental service contact your local Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) based within your Primary Care Trust, listed below.
