Wheelchairs are provided by the NHS through one of three wheelchair services. These are East and North Herts NHS Trust (North Herts and Stevenage), East and North Herts Wheelchair Service (Welwyn, Hatfield, East Herts and Broxbourne) and West Herts Wheelchair Service (Three Rivers, Watford, Dacorum, St Albans and Hertsmere). Click on the 'Wheelchair services in Hertfordshire' link below for more details.
For manual wheelchairs you can contact these services yourself. However, if you require an electric wheelchair you need to be referred by a professional. In the first place it is advisable to talk to your GP about any condition you have that is impairing your mobility.
To loan or purchase a chair privately, contact the Exhibitions Manager at Hertfordshire Action on Disability (HAD) for impartial advice. HAD has an Easier Living Centre (renamed the Terry Stevens Centre in 2005)where you can try out and purchase aids and equipment.
If you need the loan of a wheelchair or walking aid for just a short while, you can contact the British Red Cross.
