Cycling

Cycling is an excellent form of exercise and fun. It also gets you from A to B and offers independence. There are several types of cycle for disabled people, including handbikes, tricycles, tandems and attaching a wheelchair to a cycle in a combination called a passenger cycle.

If you are interested in taking up cycling and are likely to need a bicycle with adaptations, some useful organisations are listed below. To view the websites, select the relevant link on the right of this page.

The London Cycling Campaign has a disability action group and an 'all abilities guide' which you can download from their website. This guide contains details of cycle holidays, cycling for children with disabilities, types of cycle, manufacturers and suppliers, cycling projects in London, bike hire and cycle training.

Biking and Disability (BAD) can also provide information on cycles available to increase mobility: telephone 01925 764014.

The Company of Cyclists promotes cycling and produces a factsheet on cycling and disability which includes details on manufacturers, specialist shops and suppliers. See their website for contact details.

Whizzkids have a list of companies that provide specialist cycles listed on their website. They also provide funding for tricycles for disabled children.

The Disabled Living Foundation has details of some cycling projects on the self help section of their website.

Sustrans audited traffic-free sections of the National Cycle Network in Scotland for accessibility as part of a research project in 2003-04. A leaflet and information sheets about access for disabled people to cycle routes in Scotland can be obtained from their information line (telephone 0845 1130065) or downloaded from their website.
