Change of Name Deed Service
Hertfordshire County Council is now offering a new service - an official Change of Name Deed Service.
In the UK anyone can change their name, perfectly legally, without drawing up a formal record. However in order to make the new name officially accepted many organisations such as banks, building societies and the Passport Agency require some form of "proof" of the name change so an official Change of Name Deed is needed.
When deciding on your chosen name, the new name must not be rude or offensive, neither can it be used to create the impression of an inherited or awarded title such as Sir, Dame, Lord and Lady etc nor be chosen with the intent to defraud.
How to Apply to Change your Name
Simply submit the appropriate application form to the Citizenship Unit. Your application will be verified and processed during a short appointment and your new name will then be officially recognised.
The costs of the service are:
- Adult (standard) - £45
- Couple (standard) - £65
- Family (standard) including 2 children - £75
- Additional children - £5 per child
- Child only - £45
The above costs include the original Change of Name Deed and a certified copy. A copy will be retained in the County Council archive and certified copies can be purchased at a later date for a fee of £10
