A Religious Marriage

If you wish to be married according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of England or Wales you must first contact the Vicar. If he is able to marry you he will arrange for the Banns to be called or for a common licence to be issued. There is generally no need to involve the Register Office.

If you are getting married in any other church or religious building you will need to give a notice of marriage to the Superintendent Registrar of the district in which you reside.

The church or religious building will usually have an appointed person who will register your marriage. If this is not the case and you will need a Registrar at your wedding, you will need to arrange this with the Register Office of the district where the building is situated. This should be done as far as in advance as possible.
