What documents will need to be provided?

When arranging an appointment to enter a notice of marriage, the Superintendent Registrar may ask you to produce one or more of the following documents:

Passport/ Birth Certificate: A passport is ideal as proof of your identity. If you do not have a current valid passport we will advise you as to what other forms of identity are acceptable for proving identity.

Decree Absolute: If you have been married and divorced you will need to show a decree absolute bearing the court’s original stamp. If the divorce took place in another country, you should bring the original document announcing your divorce plus, if necessary, an English translation.

Death Certificate: If either of you is widowed you will need to bring your late spouse’s death certificate. Foreign documents should be accompanied by a certified English translation.

Change Of Name Document: Deed Poll document or Statutory declaration (if you have changed your name in this way).

If either of you is under eighteen you will need to bring proof of your parents’ or guardian’s consent. You can do this by asking them to fill in a form, which we will supply. If your parents are divorced we will need to see the Court Order that gives custody to one or other parent.
