What is a Youth Advocate I hear you ask! Youth Advocates are trained to develop skills in representing other young people and putting their views forward on their behalf.
Our training courses are great fun and you can make new friends at the same time as you’re learning new skills.
The Watford Youth Advocates organised the summer 2008 Take 2 event in Watford which featured young bands, dance groups, theatre groups, drumming workshops, bungee run and even a bouncy castle! The Advocates also invited lots of local services along to promote what they do, and these included Watford’s Motorbike project, St Johns Ambulance Service, Health services, Signpost Youth Counselling service, Watford One Stop Shop, and of course us Youth Connexions!
The Youth Advocates are leading on developing premises in the town centre into a fabulous facility for young people, which will include a multi media suite, recording studios, training kitchen, sports and climbing facilities, internet cafe and information advice and guidance services.
These are just two examples of the kind of project that the Youth Advocates get involved with. They also play an important part in the Watford District Children’s Trust Partnership (DCTP) which is a group made up of people who are providing services to young people in Watford. The Youth Advocates attend DCTP meetings and make sure that young people’s views are heard when it comes to making decisions.
The Youth Advocates frequently team up with the Youth Council, especially when both groups are involved in major events or activities that affect young people in Watford.
