Home of the Lytton family since 1490, the romantic Victorian gothic exterior of Knebworth House does little to prepare the visitor for what to expect inside. The house, its decor and contents encapsulate 500 years of English history from early Tudor times to the present day through the 19 generations of one family.
The present 25 acre formal garden dates, largely, from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, with more recent, and continuing, restoration and additions.
Sir Edwin Lutyens re-designed the formal gardens immediate to the House. Each of the ‘rooms’ within the garden has its own identity, colour and flowering time, including: Sunken lawn; Rose garden; Green garden; Gold garden; Malus walk; Pet’s cemetery; Brick garden; the Maze; Ornamental ponds; Wilderness and Dinosaur trail; the Walled garden with culinary herbs and vegetables; the Jekyll Herb garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll in 1907.
The 250 acre park includes an adventure playground and miniature railway and is the setting for many events, which take place during the summer months.
