Only fragments remain of this once large and important castle; the motte in the north east corner stands 45 feet high and the remains of a complicated arrangement of inner and outer moats can still be seen. William the Conqueror finally accepted the surrender of the Saxons at Berkhamsted, after his defeat of King Harold at Hastings.
Opening hours are daily: 10.00am-4.00pm (winter); 10.00am-6.00pm (summer).
