The Competition Commission (CC) is an independent public body, which was established in 1999 to replace the former Monoplies and Mergers Commission.
The Commission conducts in-depth inquiries into mergers (anticipated and completed); markets (the successor to monoploy inquiries) and the regulation of the major regulated industries. The CC cannot intitiate its own inquiries. It carries out inquiries in response to a reference from another authority usually the Office of Fair Trading but also from certain industry regulators.
The Enterprise Act 2002 enhanced the CC's role so that it is now responsible for making decisions (rather than recommendations) on competition questions in merger and market cases and for making and implementing decisions on appropriate remedies.
