The Hoddesdon Society, has aims parallel with the Civic Trust, seeking to:
* Encourage high standards of architecture, town planning, and landscaping.
* Stimulate public interest and care for the beauty, history and character of Hoddesdon and its surroundings.
* Preserve and protect the local environment, develop and improve features of public amenity and those of historic interest.
Within the organisation the main committee sets up Working Groups to pursue matters of special interest. Regular meetings review progress, problems and consider ideas requiring action.
Trees have become increasingly important to the Society over the years. Finding opportunities for the planting of new trees has been as important to us as arranging tree preservation orders and keeping an eye on trees under threat.
Planning is perhaps the major concern of the Society, examining the planning applications just before they are to be considered by the Borough Council Committee. Also the Society encourages good planning by instituting The Hoddesdon Society Award.
Displays and Exhibitions are set up from time to time and the Society has a permanent display in Hoddesdon Library.
The Society Maintains contact with organisations sharing similar aims and interests such as the Friends of Lowewood Museum which was set up by a team of volunteers who were also Society members.
Membership is open to all who live or work in or near Hoddesdon and who are interested in its future.
The Hoddesdon Society has published two tea towels featuring local points of interest. Also a walks booklet has been revised and re-issued after thorough research:
