The society was founded in 1962 and campaigns to protect and preserve the environment of Hitchin, described as the best preserved medieval market town within easy reach of London. This is achieved through meetings, lectures, study groups, exhibitions and liaison with local authorities. It is registered with the Civic Trust as the civic society for Hitchin.
Members meet to enjoy talks on matters of local interest, with some visits and guided walks which are arranged in the summer months. Details are available from the Membership Secretary.
The society is open to all age groups and is not involved in political or religious activity. The Society makes an annual Civic Award, and is the local organiser for Heritage Open Days.
Life membership is also available.
