Action on Elder Abuse aims to prevent abuse in old age by promoting changes in policy and practice through raising awareness, education, promoting research and the collection and dissemination of information.
The group runs a national information and enquiry service and provides guidance for the prevention of and action on abuse of older people. They organise conferences and workshops and provide a bimonthly newsletter for members and a number of publications, leaflets etc. A number of publications available via the Helpline number.
It runs an 'Elder Abuse' response line, a confidential information and support service for anyone concerned about the abuse of an older person.
The helpline services is on telephone number 0808 808 8141 Monday to Friday 9.00am-5.00am with a repsonse in English, (Welsh, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi leaflets).
Action on Elder Abuse recognises 5 different types of abuse of older people:
* Physical * Psychological * Sexual * Financial * Neglect.
They also know that abuse can occur anywhere including at home, in hospital, in residential and nursing homes, at day care or social places.
Their services are used by a wide range of people including abused older people themselves, abusers, relatives, friends, neighbours, professional staff (nurses, social workers, police etc) visitors (home helps etc) and others.
