HACRO aims to:
* encourage informed opinion relating to crime;
* be a source of support to those working with offenders in all settings;
* be alive to current issues of public concern;
* work with offenders to prevent re-offending.
HACRO has been working in Hertfordshire since 1974 in association with the statutory authorities and voluntary organisations. Currently HACRO has housing advisers at HMP The Mount and in SW Herts Probation Centre; interviews all potential volunteers for HMP The Mount under its 'Step Inside' compact with the prison; helps run the Play Area at HMP The Mount in association with CDA Herts; provides small grants to offenders and ex-offenders recommended by probation officers to aid resettlement and rehabilitation; publishes 'Sentenced to Prison' a leaflet for offenders being sentenced to custody from Hertfordshire courts and their families. HACRO is constantly looking to seek new ways to support its aims.
HACRO also sits on a number of committees and working parties in the county relating to criminal justice issues including the Consulation Leaders Group of the County Criminal Justice Board. HACRO publishes a spring Briefing and an annual report and invites nationally renowned speakers to its AGMs.
Opportunities for volunteering at HMP The Mount include helping prisoners with their education, particularly basic literacy; training in business skills; professional counselling; prison visiting and befriending; family support in the visitors centre; looking after children during prison visits in the play area; helping in the gardens and various admin positions.
