EXTEND was founded in 1976 to promote gentle exercise to music for people over sixty and people with disabilities of any age. It is now a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. EXTEND is approved by government departments and by some local authorities. Financial support also comes from individuals. EXTEND provides qualifying training courses for EXTEND teachers and retains a database of qualified EXTEND teachers offering classes to the general public.
EXTEND is active in many parts of the country, in hospitals, nursing homes, sheltered housing, special needs clubs, community education centres and in village halls - in addition many EXTEND teachers provide one-to-one sessions for those who require specialised exercise, such as stroke patients. EXTENDERS report a marked improvement in their feeling of well being as a result of classes given by EXTEND teachers. The exercises can provide a spring board to other pursuits and sports that are even more active. Scientific research supports the claims made that EXTEND improves the quality of life for participants and enables them to carry out activities of daily life.
