The HSO meets at Kingshott School, Stevenage Road, Hitchin on Wednesdays at 7.30pm-9.30pm. The programme of rehearsals is displayed on the website.

The Orchestra is formed mainly from amateur instrumentalists under the professional direction of conductor (Paul Adrian Rooke) and leader (Janet Hicks) with occasional professional guest players. The repertoire is largely classical music and the orchestra rehearse weekly during Autumn and Spring school terms, presenting two major concerts each year (normally May and November).

Membership is by subscription per term of 12 rehearsals. (Details of rates can be obtained from Paul Adrian Rooke at www.pauladrianrooke.com)

Currently (March 2009) the orchestra has vacancies in all string sections and in brass and percussion sections. Instrumental ability equivalent to at least Grade VI of the Associated Board of Music Schools would normally be required.
