St Albans Choral Society gave its first performance in December 1944 and throughout its history has performed a huge part of the choral repertoire with composers that include Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel, Haydn, Mozarts Carl Orff, Schubert, Verdi and Vivaldi. In recent seasons the choir has introduced several contemporary works into its concert programmes, and enjoys a special relationship with Cecilia McDowall who, as the choir's first ever composer-in-association, fulfilled a major and universally acclaimed commission, a setting of the Stabat Mater, for the choir's Diamond Jubilee concert in October 2004.
They currently have about seventy members and the choir regularly holds concerts at St Albans Abbey and other venues throughout St Albans and the surrounding area. The choir is very fortunate to have the services of the critically acclaimed Orchestra Nova as its accompanying ensemble and is renowned for its choice of outstanding vocal and instrumental talent.
If you enjoy singing, have a reasonable voice and like a musical challenge, why not come along and join them? They rehearse on Thursday evenings from September until June - you will be sure of a friendly welcome and an uplifting musical experience from our inspired music director, George Vass.
